Note: since some of the pieces here are quite long, you may wish to download them and read them offline; if you do, I suggest saving them as source rather than plain text, and reading them with your web browser, because there is a lot of formatting -- italics, blockquotes, hypertext footnotes, etc. -- which won't show up properly in ASCII.
